イージス・アショア計画中止
河野太郎 防衛大臣は6月25日、北朝鮮の脅威から日本を守ることを目的とした米国製の陸上配備型迎撃ミサイルシステム「イージス・アショア」配備計画の撤退を発表した。
山口県むつみ基地近くの住民へ安全が確保できないことが判明したためで、配備を延期する（suspended） とした1週間後の発表だった。ミサイル防衛システムの2つのうちもう一つは、秋田市で計画されていた 。
イージス・アショアの安全性確保できず
現在の設計では、ミサイルから落ちるロケットブースターがむつみ基地の外に絶対に落ちないとは限らないことがわかった。
政府は、ロケットブースターが基地外におちる事は絶対にないと約束していた（promised ）。しかし、不具合が見つかったシステムを修正するには、ソフトウェアだけでなくハードウェアも完全に再設計する必要があり（require a total redesign）、コストと時間がかかりすぎるとのこと。
今後の防衛は？
記者会見で、河野大臣は迷惑をかけたこと（inconvenience ）を謝罪し、国の防衛戦略（the nation’s defense strategies）を実行する（carry out）ための最良の方法について米国と日本で議論（discussions ）が続くと述べた。
イージス陸上防衛システムは、北朝鮮からのますますひどくなる脅威 （escalating threats）に対し、日本の国の能力を強化すること（bolstering）を目的としていた。
