UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee is set to resume deliberations on nominations for its list of Intangible Cultural Heritages on Thursday.

The meeting began in Mauritius on Wednesday. But the committee failed to discuss Japan’s proposals, after studies on other proposals took all the time available.

Japan proposed 10 rituals from 8 prefectures. They are categorized as “Raiho-shin,” meaning visits of deities in masks and costumes. One of them is the well-known scary figure of Namahage in Oga, Akita Prefecture.

As an advisory body to UNESCO in October recommended that the traditional events should be on the list, the committee is expected to finalize the registration.
