500近くの種類の海鮮物が、日本の首都で売られている。築地市場は、東京の最高峰のレストランがある高級な（upscale）街・銀座（Ginza district）に 歩いていける所にあり（within walking distance）、シェフたちは、良い食材を求めて築地市場の業者（vendors）とのつながりを深めてきた。
築地市場は、1923年の関東大震災（the great Kanto earthquake ）が起こったの後（aftermath）、1935年に建てられた。設立当時は、トタンの小屋（corrugated iron sheds）だったが、どんどん広がっていき（sprawl） にぎわいのある市場になった。しかし、築地市場は、設備が古くなり（ rundown）、混雑しすぎる（overcrowded） と見られることもあった。
マグロの解体ショー
中市場で行われるマグロの競り（Tuna auctions）は、大物の買い手（big-spending buyers）を魅了してきた。
新年の競り（せり）（The New Year auction）はしばしば、通常より高値で 取引される。この築地市場の新年のマグロの競り（せり）は、商売繁盛の縁起を担いでいる（auspicious for business）からだ。
本マグロ（bluefin tuna）は、昨年の競りでは、なんと7千420万円で（74.2 million yen）で売られた。2013年にはなんと、1匹の本マグロ（a single bluefin）が、1,700,000＄（約1億5000万円）で売れている。

豊洲にある50億ドル（$5bn）の施設は、、以前化学工場として使われていた場所で、汚染問題（contamination concerns）で、移転が遅れてきた。
豊洲に移転をひかえた最後の週にも、数百人の抗議者（protesters）が、雨の中、移転に反対の声を上げて（speak out）いた。
その新しい市場は、10月11日木曜日に開場する予定である。
